Car Assembly Tips

bullet

Only official BSA Pinewood Derby cars, wheels, and axils are allowed.

bullet

Decals, weights, and all other accessories are up to your imagination.

bullet

Our Pack uses a "straight sloped" track. Placement of weight on the car will not affect the outcome of the race.

bullet

The most important factors that influence the speed of the car:
• Make sure the axils & wheels are at right angles (90°) to the car.
• Remove any "burrs" or ridges from the axils and wheels
• Lubricate the wheel hubs (where the axils and wheels meet) with a
dry lubricant such as Graphite

bullet

The car must weigh 5.0 ounces as determined by the Pack 80 scale. We will have the scale at the Pack and Den meetings during January to pre-check the weight of the cars. Final "Official" weighing of the cars will take place on race day.

bullet

Cars will be weighed before the start of the race and will be impounded by the race officials until the end of the race.

bullet

After a car is impounded, only the car's owner (Cub Scout) will be allowed to touch the car.

bullet

The Pack will be divided into 2 Groups. Tiger & Wolf dens in Group 1, Bear & Webelos in Group 2.

bullet

Each Cub will draw a random number to determine start order. Number 1 & 2 will race each other twice. Once in the right lane, once in the left lane. If the same car wins both races, it will be declared the winner of that heat. If the race is split, a third race will determine the winner.

bullet

Cars 3 & 4 will follow the same pattern until all cars have raced.

bullet

The winner of each heat will race against the winner of another heat in a similar fashion until a Group finalist and Runner Up has been determined

bullet

The Finalist and Runner Up from each Group will compete in a final round for the Grand Champion.

bullet

Cubs will also vote on the best looking car.
